Background of the Study

Childhood pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five years old, especially in low-resource settings like Nigeria (Oluwadare et al., 2024). Early detection, appropriate antibiotic treatment, and supportive care are critical in reducing the burden of childhood pneumonia. Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play a central role in the management of pediatric pneumonia, including the administration of medication, monitoring vital signs, and providing respiratory support (Chukwu et al., 2023). Their ability to recognize early signs of pneumonia and provide timely interventions can significantly affect patient recovery rates and prevent complications such as sepsis and respiratory failure.

At Jigawa State General Hospital, a major healthcare facility in the northern part of Nigeria, childhood pneumonia is a common cause of hospitalization. However, there is limited research on nurses’ knowledge of pneumonia management and their intervention strategies at this facility. Given the high incidence of respiratory infections in children, it is crucial to assess how well nurses are prepared to manage pneumonia cases, from early detection to treatment and follow-up care.

This study aims to evaluate nurses' knowledge of childhood pneumonia and their intervention strategies in Jigawa State General Hospital. The goal is to assess how well nurses are equipped to manage pneumonia in children and identify areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of pneumonia treatment guidelines, childhood pneumonia remains a leading cause of death in Nigerian children. Nurses at Jigawa State General Hospital play a key role in early detection, administration of treatment, and family education, but there is insufficient evidence regarding their knowledge and the effectiveness of their intervention strategies. A lack of proper knowledge may lead to delays in treatment, inappropriate use of antibiotics, and poor patient outcomes. Therefore, this study seeks to assess nurses' knowledge and their approach to managing childhood pneumonia at Jigawa State General Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of childhood pneumonia among nurses at Jigawa State General Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the intervention strategies used by nurses in the management of childhood pneumonia.
  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in the management of childhood pneumonia and propose recommendations for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of childhood pneumonia among nurses at Jigawa State General Hospital?
  2. What intervention strategies do nurses employ in the management of childhood pneumonia?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing childhood pneumonia, and how can these challenges be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with higher knowledge of childhood pneumonia will demonstrate more effective intervention strategies.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge of childhood pneumonia and the recovery rates of affected children.
  3. Barriers such as inadequate resources and insufficient training hinder effective pneumonia management by nurses at Jigawa State General Hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in pediatric and emergency departments at Jigawa State General Hospital. Limitations may include small sample sizes, potential recall bias, and the challenges of measuring the effectiveness of nursing interventions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Childhood Pneumonia: An infection of the lungs, primarily affecting children under the age of five, caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
  • Intervention Strategies: The methods employed by nurses to manage childhood pneumonia, including medication administration, respiratory support, and family education.
  • Nurses' Knowledge: The understanding of childhood pneumonia pathophysiology, treatment protocols, and preventative measures among nursing staff.
