Background of the Study
Childhood pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five years old, especially in low-resource settings like Nigeria (Oluwadare et al., 2024). Early detection, appropriate antibiotic treatment, and supportive care are critical in reducing the burden of childhood pneumonia. Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play a central role in the management of pediatric pneumonia, including the administration of medication, monitoring vital signs, and providing respiratory support (Chukwu et al., 2023). Their ability to recognize early signs of pneumonia and provide timely interventions can significantly affect patient recovery rates and prevent complications such as sepsis and respiratory failure.
At Jigawa State General Hospital, a major healthcare facility in the northern part of Nigeria, childhood pneumonia is a common cause of hospitalization. However, there is limited research on nurses’ knowledge of pneumonia management and their intervention strategies at this facility. Given the high incidence of respiratory infections in children, it is crucial to assess how well nurses are prepared to manage pneumonia cases, from early detection to treatment and follow-up care.
This study aims to evaluate nurses' knowledge of childhood pneumonia and their intervention strategies in Jigawa State General Hospital. The goal is to assess how well nurses are equipped to manage pneumonia in children and identify areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of pneumonia treatment guidelines, childhood pneumonia remains a leading cause of death in Nigerian children. Nurses at Jigawa State General Hospital play a key role in early detection, administration of treatment, and family education, but there is insufficient evidence regarding their knowledge and the effectiveness of their intervention strategies. A lack of proper knowledge may lead to delays in treatment, inappropriate use of antibiotics, and poor patient outcomes. Therefore, this study seeks to assess nurses' knowledge and their approach to managing childhood pneumonia at Jigawa State General Hospital.
